In an effort to provide additional parking options for downtown visitors, Park Omaha launched a pilot initiative to drop rates in City of Omaha parking garages. The new rates are $1 per hour with a $10 maximum.
“We want to make sure people have affordable options,” said Ken Smith, parking division manager. “Our goal is to take a balanced approached to setting parking rates based on consumer demand.”
According to Smith, downtown parkers like the new rates.
“We’ve seen an average of 46 percent increase since the first month,” said Smith.
He adds, the pilot initiative helped the City of Omaha establish a baseline for usage and learn how long people typically park in garages. It turns out that two and half hours is the average amount of time a car is parked in a garage. The pilot initiative is now a permanent option for downtown visitors.
